Abstract
Background:
The Internet of Things (IoT) holds the promise of a highly connected world, but the environmental impact of battery-powered devices presents a significant challenge. ONiO, a visionary company from Norway, is leading the charge towards a sustainable IoT future with their revolutionary product, ONiO.zero. This microcontroller unit (MCU) operates entirely on ambient energy, eliminating the need for batteries and reducing environmental waste. Sofics is proud to support this mission with our cutting-edge ultra-low leakage Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection clamps, which are integral to the functionality of ONiO’s innovative MCU.
---------------
Part 1: ONiO’s Vision and ONiO.zero
In the first part of our presentation, we will introduce ONiO and their groundbreaking product, ONiO.zero. ONiO envisions an IoT future free from the environmental burden of batteries. The ONiO.zero MCU harnesses energy from its surroundings, operating without the need for coincells, batteries, supercaps, lithium, or any other toxic components. This innovation has the potential to drastically reduce the 28 billion primary batteries discarded annually, which end up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution. By removing the battery from IoT devices, ONiO is addressing a critical environmental issue and paving the way for a more sustainable future.
--------------
Part 2: Sofics’ Ultra-Low Leakage ESD Protection Solutions
The second part of our presentation will focus on Sofics’ ultra-low leakage ESD protection cells, crucial for the ONiO.zero MCU, providing protection with leakage currents in the nano-ampere range, as opposed to the typical micro-ampere range. This significant reduction in leakage current enhances the performance of the MCU in various modes, including standby, sleep, operational, and power-cycling. We will discuss the specific solutions delivered to ONiO, highlighting our collaboration on TSMC’s 40nm CMOS technology. These advanced ESD protection solutions not only ensure the reliability of the ONiO.zero MCU but also contribute to its energy efficiency, supporting ONiO’s mission to eliminate batteries from IoT devices.
------------
Conclusion:
Through this presentation, we aim to showcase the synergistic collaboration between Sofics and ONiO in creating a sustainable IoT future. Our ultra-low leakage ESD protection solutions are a critical enabler of ONiO’s battery-free MCU, exemplifying how innovative technology can drive environmental stewardship. By working together, we are making strides towards reducing electronic waste and promoting a greener planet.
